A high vacuum, thin film deposition system for coating eyeglass lenses.
KDI was chosen to move forward with the redesign and manufacture of a High Vacuum, Thin Film Deposition System.
Traditionally, the market for anti-reflective and mirror coatings had been dominated by lens manufacturers and wholesale labs. This system allows independent opthalmamic stores to bring coating capabilities in house. A current system was being manufactured and sold in Europe. The OEM wanted to find a contract manufacturer to build the machine in the US for the US market.
KDI was referred to this OEM by a former customer and was one of five contract manufacturers evaluated.
The top two were asked to compete in a “build off” where each company built one of the current model.
KDI successfully built an operational system but noticed ways that the system could be improved. A number of changes were recommended that would make the system easier to manufacture, easier to service/ maintain, more reliable and able to meet FCC and safety agency requirements.
Because of KDI’s Design For Manufacture suggestions and years of complex device manufacturing experience, they were chosen to be the US manufacturer.
KDI re-designed an existing machine to be:
- Easier to manufacture
- Easier to service and maintain
- More reliable
- Able to meet FCC and safety agency requirements
