Centrifuge Development

Custom Centrifuge Development

KDI has been involved in a variety of development and manufacturing projects over the years that involve centrifugation.  As a result of these projects, we have a broad base of knowledge and experience in designing, building and testing centrifuges. Examples of centrifuge development include:

  • DNA Isolation
  • Blood Processing
  • Blood Platelet Separation
  • Medical Device Manufacturing

DNA Isolation

Modified a stock centrifuge for use in a whole blood to DNA purification instrument.  The instrument could load and unload the centrifuge automatically while maintaining the traceability of sixteen simultaneously centrifuged samples.  The control of the centrifuge was integrated into the overall controls of the instrument including interlocks, speeds, duration and temperature.

Blood Processing

Re-designed a blood processing centrifuge drive bearing/ shaft assembly to reduce the generation of undesirable heat.  In addition to reducing heat, the redesigned system was able to be installed in existing product in the field. This reduced overall cost and maintained system reliability and accuracy.

Blood Platelet Separation

Designed a centrifuge that allows blood to be pumped from a fixed location into and out of a spinning disposable mounted on the centrifuge (no rotary unions or swivel joints).  The centrifuge has two stages; the top portion which spins at approximately 4000 RPM and the bottom portion which turns at half the speed of the top.  The final design resulted in a product that is inherently balanced when manufactured, requiring no adjustments for dynamic or static balance.

Medical device manufacturing

Designed and built both 48 inch and 60 inch diameter, 12-station centrifuges to impregnate products with a 2-part urethane.  The 48 inch centrifuge was designed for use as a research and development machine. The 60 inch diameter machine was designed for use in a production environment.  Both centrifuges were designed to be easily accessible to an operator for loading.
